What is industrial solar energy?
Industrial Solar Energy is considered “distributed generation,” meaning that the energy produced by the system is used at or near the point of generation. Distributed generation projects such as rooftop or ground-mounted solar are usually connected to the local electric grid. This allows for commercial property owners to take advantage of net metering, a policy enabling distributed generation customers to send unused electricity back to the grid for a monetary credit.
When you install a solar energy system without a backup battery, you’ll still be connected to the grid and any surplus power is sent back to the grid, With Net Metering, you get credits for this excess energy that you can use when your home draws power from the grid at night or when your system is underproducing.
How does Net Metering work?
It may sound complicated, but the idea behind Net Metering is simple: your solar energy system produces a surplus, and when you don’t have a backup battery and your home remains connected to the grid, surplus energy goes back into the grid. The energy company
thanks you by running your meter backwards, resulting in energy credits.
More specifically, Net Metering works like this:
- Your system will likely produce a surplus of energy during the day, most likely at times of peak sunlight, like early to mid afternoon when you aren’t home to use this energy.
- Without a backup battery, this surplus energy goes back to the grid for storage and eventual use, running your meter backwards.
- You’ll pull energy from the grid when your system is under-producing, like at night or on rainy days, but since your system has already contributed energy to the grid, you’ll get to use energy credits you received from your surplus rather than be billed for your usage.
- You won’t get a chequefrom your energy company, but you’ll likely start seeing negative energy bills indicating the credit you have, based on the amount of energy your system has contributed to the grid for the month. These credits can carry over from month to month, and even year to year.
Solar Energy & the Grid
When can you use net metering?
Consider your energy goals to see whether or not your system will benefit from
setting up Net Metering with your energy company:
If you are looking for total energy
independence…
Then you’ll want to chequeout the Tesla PowerWall backup battery. With a backup battery, your solar energy system won’t be connected to the grid, which means you won’t be able to use (or likely have an interest in) Net Metering.
If you DON’T PLAN TO INSTALL A
BACKUP BATTERY…
Your solar energy system will remain connected to the electric grid in your community. This will provide you with energy when your system is under-producing, and you’ll be able to utilise Net Metering by receiving credits when your system produces a surplus.
Benefits of Net Metering
If your home will remain connected to the electric grid once your solar energy system is installed, you can look forward to a number of benefits when you participate in Net Metering!
Don’t be left in the dark.
Remaining connected to the grid ensures you’ll have power when your solar energy system is under-producing or when the sun isn’t shining. Net Metering makes it cost effective!
Be compensated for solar use with energy credits.
Receive energy credits and negative energy bills when your system generates more energy than you need and sends it back to the grid.
Contribute to your community’s energy supply.
Your solar panels will contribute to your community’s energy supply, and will do so with completely clean, renewable energy.
Most states offer Net Metering.
Net Metering is available in most states in Australia.
Energy credits transfer.
Whether you need energy from the grid a few times a week or few times every month, energy credits transfer. You’ll get credited for energy your system sends back to the grid today, and you can use those credits later on, whether that’s a month, several months, or even a year from now.
